You must have heard the benefits of antioxidants and lemon .First of all, let us know the meaning of antioxidants. They are substances that protect your cells against the effect of free radicals.Freen radicals can damage cells and plays a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Antioxidants are compounds that neutralize free radicals, or unstable oxygen molecules, in your body that damage cells and tissues and increase your risk of illness and disease.  They are molecules produced by the breakdown of food, or by environmental exposures like tobacco and harmful radiation. Antioxidant substances include Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, Lycopene, Lutein and Beta-carotene. They are found in many foods like fruits and vegetables, nuts, grains, meat and fish.

Antioxidants are nutrients as well as enzymes which play a role in preventing the development of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, stroke and cataracts. It is not possible for us to stop the damage caused by free radicals. Oxidants that develop from processes within our bodies are formed due to aerobic respiration, metabolism and inflammation. Also our antioxidant systems are not perfect .Therefore, it is important to include food with antioxidant properties.

Lemon is widely known all over the world for its antioxidant properties. Lemon is sour in taste, light and an astringent. It also keeps in check the excessive flow of bile and cleanses your mouth. Lemon is beneficial for effective digestion and aids constipation. In addition, the sour yellow fruit prevents vomiting, acidity and rheumatism. Lemon juice has an anti-bacterial property as well which help treat malaria, cholera, typhoid and diphtheria. Lemon contains antioxidants like Vitamin A, Vitamin C along with niacin and thiamin in small amounts.

Lemon juice gives relief in fever and when mixed with water is useful in quenching the thirst of diabetic patients. It also gives immediate relief in abdominal disorders. Lemon has a soothing effect for the nerves and the heart .Vitamin P in lemon strengthens the blood vessels and prevents internal hemorrhage. Lemon is very much useful in maintaining the good health of the teeth and the bones. Lemon-juice is a diuretic and therefore, gives relief in kidney and bladder disorders. Lemon has been used in destroying intestinal worms and helps to cure hepatitis and other innumerable diseases.

Lemon is effective in the cases of insufficient oxygen and difficulty in breathing. Drinking lemon water will increase your intake of some of the antioxidants you need for good health. To make lemon water to increase your intake of antioxidants, add the juice of half of one fresh medium or large lemon into half a glass of water. While cooking your food add lemon to add flavor and also antioxidant properties. Lemons are highly acidic, and this acid will react with different foods in different ways. You can add lemon juice in soups, drinks and other exotic dishes. Also it can be used in chicken to enhance the flavor. Do not use too much lemon in your dishes as it can spoil the taste.
